The Nike Space Hippie 01 “Vast Grey” explores the concept of sustainability as part of the “Space Hippie” collection of innovative footwear styles. Citing a lack of resupply mission on both Mars and Earth, Nike set out to create a lineup of shoes using “space junk,” also known as leftover scraps and materials from the brand’s cutting room floor. Releasing as part of a five-piece sustainable collection, the Nike Space Hippie 01 “This Is Trash” utilizes a grey knit upper constructed from Space Waste Yarn, featuring approximately 90% recycled polyester made with a combination of plastic bottles, T-shirts and yarn scrap. The sock-like build sits atop a Crater Foam midsole, formed with a blend of Nike Grind Rubber and various foam compounds. Underfoot, the sockliner is made with ZoomX foam scraps for a cushioned ride.
